Insulated dog kennel covers are useful for keeping a pet warm and dry when not at home. Many covers use a zippered opening in order to be closed around a pet when desired and opened for use when the pet is indoors. However, such zippered dog kennel covers are generally difficult to open and close, and pets can become trapped in the kennel when not being used.
In addition, existing pet carriers, which typically have a zipper in the bottom and which allow pets to access their respective home or sleeping quarters, have many difficulties. Among these are the issue of pet excrement, urine, or other material contacting the bottom of the carrier, and the issue of the carrier becoming dislodged or falling over if the carrier is overturned. Therefore, most carriers are generally difficult to use. In addition, many such carriers generally cannot be transported without disassembly.
The above-described difficulties cause many individuals to not own a pet for fear that their pet may be harmed. These individuals may have a pet for several years and eventually decide to own a kennel, but choose not to buy a kennel and find the difficulties of existing kennels to be too great.
As a result of the difficulties associated with existing pet kennels, many people do not own pets. Pet owners generally will not own a pet if it is difficult to transport a pet and if the pet kennel has zippers in the bottom. The pet owners have been known to buy multiple kennels. This practice can be expensive, requires a large amount of time to transport and store, and is burdensome to the owners.
It is, therefore, desirable to provide a pet carrier with a cover that prevents access to a sleeping or home quarters of a pet when not in use, but which is simple and easy to open. It is desirable to provide a pet carrier that is generally simple and easy to use and transport. It is also desirable to provide a pet carrier that allows easy storage and transportation, provides the ability to securely transport a pet, and provides the ability to securely transport a pet with a sleeping area while allowing easy access to the sleeping area.
The problems and disadvantages associated with the prior art are overcome by the present invention which provides a pet carrier with a cover. The cover is positioned on top of the pet carrier and has an opening that allows access to the sleeping area of the pet carrier.
The pet carrier includes a contner with a bottom, a sidewall extending upwardly from the bottom, a first end and a second end. The first end includes a first opening. The pet carrier also includes a cover. The cover is sized and shaped to fit the contner and is dimensioned and shaped to cover the opening. The cover includes a first side that is pivotally attached to a second side. The first side includes a first fold line and the second side includes a second fold line. The first and second sides are folded upwardly when the cover is in a closed position. The second fold line is oriented between the first fold line and a third fold line. The first and second sides are folded upwardly when the cover is in an open position. The first side includes an opening that aligns with the first opening when the cover is in the closed position.
The cover also includes a fourth side that is folded downwardly when the cover is in the open position. A portion of the cover extends past the opening when the cover is in the open position. The first and second sides are flexible and the third and fourth sides are rigid. A portion of the first and second sides define a sleeping area that is accessible from the open position of the cover. The portion of the cover extending past the opening is aligned with the opening when the cover is in the open position.
The cover includes a handle that is secured to the cover. The cover may also include a locking mechanism to secure the cover in the closed position.
The cover may be constructed from a durable plastic material such as a copolymer. The cover may be formed using a conventional molding technique and includes a flange and a wall that extend upwardly and downwardly from the flange. The cover may be formed using a blow molding technique. The cover may be a reclining chr cover that is suitable for securing over an in-ground swimming pool. The reclining chr cover may be formed from a vinyl material and includes a flange and a wall.
