Can cats have almonds?
By Jules Sabin, DVM
Cats do not have nuts. But that does not mean that they can’t enjoy them. Almonds, like most other foods, are best fed in the form of a food that is high in protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, and can be a bit bland. For most cats, this would be canned food.
But that is not to say that you can’t feed them raw. As long as your cat eats enough (that is, more than a handful a day), a little raw can be a treat. The best thing about raw foods is that they are more high-quality than dry foods, they have more vitamins and fewer fillers, which can be very helpful for cats suffering from digestive problems.
How to feed it?
Raw foods are not the easiest things to find, but they’re not all that difficult either. You can find commercial brands or you can make your own. I recommend finding one that does not contn corn, dry, gluten or soy, as these are all potentially problematic.
If you decide to feed raw, I suggest following these tips.
Don’t just put a handful in. This isn’t the time to splurge. Go easy. Your cat is eating it because he’s hungry, so feeding them a handful of nuts will not make them want to eat more later. A cat’s digestive system is not as flexible as that of a human being.
Feed once a day. Cats do best when they eat every few hours, and this is especially true of raw foods. They have to chew and digest them for a long period of time, so you don’t want to wt too long. Feeding twice a day or three times a day, however, is not a problem and should be fine.
Give them something else. It is important that your cat does not get so hungry from eating almonds that he is just going to eat something else, like wet food. This is especially true if you are feeding them a handful of almonds.
What are the nuts?
Almonds are a very popular food among raw-food diets because they are high in fat and protein and, because they do not contn gluten, they are also very low in carbohydrates. They are an excellent source of vitamin E, vitamin K, manganese, copper and selenium.
The seeds are rich in B vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and zinc. But most important, they are a wonderful source of fats. Almonds, as well as most other nuts, contn a type of fat called monounsaturated fat, which is actually considered a “heart-healthy” type of fat.
When is raw almond good for cats?
It can be a very versatile food. A cat can be fed almonds every day, or just on weekends. You can even feed your cat two days in a row without it being a problem. You can feed
