West Bend dog park in West Bend, Wisconsin, is the only public dog park within city limits in the state of Wisconsin. The park has three acres of fenced off park land for dogs to enjoy, which is enclosed with a chain link fence, and includes a separate section for large dogs and an agility area for dogs. It is open from dawn until dusk, seven days a week.

In 2008, the West Bend Dog Park was named one of the top dog parks in the United States by the Humane Society of the United States.

History

The West Bend Dog Park was opened in June 2000 and is situated on the West Bend Greenbelt, which is also the name of the surrounding park system that is owned by the City of West Bend. The City of West Bend purchased the West Bend Dog Park in 2002 with money from the Dog Parks of America program, which was administered by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to help cities build new or improve existing dog parks. HSUS also helped to found the Wisconsin Dog Park Association in 2006.

The West Bend Dog Park was founded by City of West Bend Parks Director Robert Coughlan, who had been a dog owner since 1977, and City of West Bend Recreation Manager and dog owner Diane Miller.

The West Bend Dog Park was originally only meant to be a temporary dog park, but it was expanded in June 2001 to. The City of West Bend Dog Park was expanded a second time in 2010, with added.

Funding for the West Bend Dog Park was partially raised through the Dog Parks of America (DPA) program administered by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2001 to 2009, but the park was never a part of the DPA program. A portion of the proceeds from dog park admissions, parking fees, and any special events went to the HSUS, and this was used to fund the DPA.

In July 2011, the West Bend Dog Park was named one of the top dog parks in the United States by the Humane Society of the United States, in its book "HSUS Top Ten Dog Parks 2011" book. The park is described by the HSUS as "a dog's paradise", with the amenities of a small, privately owned dog park.

The West Bend Dog Park was not in the top ten dog parks in the United States in 2012, but was on the 2012 list of best dog parks in the United States. The HSUS describes the West Bend Dog Park as an "attractive and clean" dog park with the amenities of a small, privately owned dog park.

The West Bend Dog Park was ranked number 1 in the top ten dog parks in the United States in 2014 by the HSUS in its book "HSUS Top Ten Dog Parks 2014".

A third expansion of the West Bend Dog Park is planned, with the city of West Bend planning to acquire a nearby property to the south of the dog park for a dog park expansion. The plan would be to create a "dog-friendly" street with several parks to the south of the West Bend Dog Park.

In July 2015, the City of West Bend acquired the property south of the dog park that will be used for a future dog park expansion. The city also plans to build a dog-friendly park on the property, which will be a dog park.

A fourth expansion of the West Bend Dog Park is planned, with the city of West Bend planning to acquire a neighboring of land in May 2017. The planned property will be added to the north of the dog park and will allow for future expansion of the dog park to the north.

In April 2017, the City of West Bend acquired a tract of land to the east of the dog park to construct an apartment complex, which will be developed by the West Bend Land Company. The property was acquired in exchange for a tract of land along Wisconsin Highway 76.

Facilities

The West Bend Dog Park has three areas for dog owners to take their dogs, the main dog park, the fenced off section for larger dogs, and the agility area.
