What cat are you

What cat are you talking about?"

"My cat was run over by a dog, right here in the middle of the mall. I couldn't believe it. My cat!"

Bobby looked over at me, "What's your cat's name?"

"I can't remember what the name is."

"Candy," Bobby volunteered.

"That's a cool name. She sounds really special."

Bobby pointed to the front of the mall. "There she is. See, over there."

"I can't believe it! Where's the dog? And where is my cat?"

"I don't know. She's not in the mall."

"Maybe someone threw her away? Is that what happened?"

"I don't think so. The dog did this." Bobby pointed to a piece of carpet that was missing on the floor near the front entrance. "No, that dog was really hungry. I thought she was going to eat the cat."

"Oh no! Candy's hurt!"

Bobby's mom came running out of the mall. "Bobby! My God!" She looked at me. "You are here with Bobby. Why didn't you tell me?"

Bobby didn't want to get involved in this situation. "It's ok, Mom. The kids found Candy on the floor. That dog did this."

"I am going to call the police!" Bobby's mom yelled. She had a phone in her hand.

Bobby was concerned. "No, don't call the police. It's my fault. I was running too fast and she got out of my sight. She's not hurt. She can't hurt anyone."

The people who worked in the mall were walking by. "Oh my gosh! What happened? Is she hurt? That's a piece of carpet. Do you think someone might have thrown her away?"

"That's not going to happen to me." Bobby was afrd they were going to take Candy away.

Bobby's mom talked to one of the store managers. "We had a dog with two puppies who used to come here. She was taken to animal control. I think she came back and destroyed something. I've called the police. I don't think she's hurt. I'm going to get Candy and take her to the veterinarian. What do you want to do?"

"I'm going with you." Bobby sd. "We can take her to the vet right away."

"No, she'll get all upset if we do that." Bobby's mom sd. "It's ok. My husband is a vet. We're going to take her to his office and have them look at her. Let's get her in the car and then I'll call and let him know."

They walked into the mall.

"This is too weird," Bobby sd. "I've never been in a place like this before. I never even thought about it. I don't know how it got started."

Bobby's mom opened the passenger door and made Candy get in the car. Bobby went around and got in the back seat. Candy was in the back seat.

The whole way there, Bobby worried about Candy. They took her to the vet's office. The staff was kind and made her comfortable. There was a little blood, but nothing serious. They gave her an anti-anxiety pill. It made her more tired than Bobby thought she'd be.

Bobby's mom sd, "I don't think this is a puppy mill or something. They're going to put her in a big kennel so she'll be safe. Bobby can't stay. You need to call him right away."

Bobby left Candy in the room. He called his mom.

He heard his mom's voice when he got on the phone.

"Bobby, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I'm not here. I wish I was there with you. We'd take care of her, just like you would. She'll be ok, Bobby. She's in a safe place. You have to do what's best for you. Take care of yourself. It's gonna be ok."

"I'm scared, Mom."

"I know you are. Just do what's right. I love you, Bobby."

"I love you, too, Mom. I gotta go."

After Bobby hung up, he felt like he was a part of something bad. He didn't want Candy to have a bad experience. He didn't want to be the one that ruined it. He told Candy's mom he'd be back as soon as he could. Candy was in the back, lying down. She sd he looked sad. She hoped he wasn't sick. He told her she was making him sad. He told her that he'd always be there for her. He gave her the keys to his car. He'd call her every night. He promised to call her every night.

He didn't tell her what the woman had sd.

If she'd known about the dog farms, she'd know what a horrible thing it was. She might get scared and maybe wouldn't want him to be there. She didn't want Candy to be there. He needed to find someone to look after her.

"I'm a good dog," she sd.

He petted her and told her that he loved her. He gave her some dog food.

"Come here."

He hugged her and told her that he was glad he had her. That she was going to be alright. He told her to call if she needed anything.

Candy knew the man would be back. He always returned, to say goodnight. She knew she'd wake up in the morning and find him wting. Sometimes he left her for a little while, but he always returned. She knew he'd be back. The man never left.

"I love you."

She heard him. He sounded sad. He sounded tired.

She told him she loved him. She missed him. She looked out the window. She'd wake up to him watching her.

She told him that if he left agn, she'd hurt herself. She didn't want to hurt herself. She hoped he'd stay. She knew he'd be back. He'd never leave her. She just didn't want to hurt herself. He sd he'd never leave. He'd always be there. She wondered what he'd tell the man, if he'd be able to, when he returned. She'd get a phone call and the man would tell him that she needed him. She just wanted him to come home. She didn't know what he'd say to him, but she knew he'd come. He'd never leave.

"I love you."

She remembered the night the man left her. She'd cried. She'd told him that she loved him. He told her that he loved her. He told her he was going to be okay. He sd he'd come back, if she did. She'd cry and he'd tell her he'd come back. She'd say she didn't want to be alone. He sd he'd come back if she would. He sd it was going to be alright. He sd she was going to be okay.

That night he told her that he'd never leave. He always came back. That he was always going to be there. That he'd be okay. He told her that he loved her. She sd that she loved him.
