Why does my cat put his paw on my mouth

Why does my cat put his paw on my mouth?

My cat puts his paw on my face and mouth when I kiss him. Is he just being affectionate or is he trying to get some sort of reaction out of me? I know this doesn't make much sense but when I look at the other cats in my neighborhood he just puts his paws on my face and mouth. I'm worried because I'm getting older and I'm starting to have some problems like my hips are tightening up and I don't think it's safe to do this anymore. I thought maybe he might think I'm going to bite him.

Thanks for any help!

If your kitten is touching you just to get you to touch him back, then that's called mutual grooming. You see, this is what kittens do. This is their form of communication. They're telling you that they like you and you are the best mom they can find. This is also why kittens start to get sick when they are two months old because they can no longer do this. It is the same for your cat and she/he may just be touching you because he/she needs the extra attention.

If it's the paw on your lips, it's not uncommon for a kitten to place their paw on the face of an adult for the same reason. If this is a regular thing, then I would say your cat is testing your ability to groom him. However, if this is something that he is doing a lot, then you might want to look into this more.

I have a cat who does this when she wants food. When she wants to groom my face she puts her paw on the back of my chin and sometimes she presses her mouth into the skin right where my chin meets my neck. She doesn't usually lick me (well, I don't think she does anyway). I guess I should say that this only happens when she's really hungry, and I usually make sure she eats right after it happens.

Cute!

I have a very curious and curious about what she does. I never thought of that as a baby thing!

Just wondering if your cat uses her teeth to groom or just her paws? My girl only licks with her tongue or scratches me with her nails. There are other times she can put her paw in my eye for some reason? Also, does this happen only when she wants food or will it happen for other reasons.

If my cat only uses his/her paws when they want food, how can I prevent him from doing it? I know what the signs are and will try to pay closer attention and also try to keep my mouth open so that it is less attractive to my cat.

What to do if the cat starts doing this? I just don't want him to stop if he's in the habit of it.

Hi, I have an old cat that does this all the time. We've always called it "licking himself". It is very gentle. When I let my hair down, and lay him in my lap, he often will rub his face on my neck, then lick my chin and nose. If I do it, it seems to help him relax and sleep better. I don't know if you have any cats, but I don't know if the hair-raising theory is true. My cats are old. I know they are old because they rarely get sick or have any problems.

Mine doesn't just rub his face on me, he'll also push his head under my jaw and run his nose down it. Very, very gently and sweet, it's so cute! I'll do it too. It looks like a baby thing, you know how they're always doing baby things. I don't know, I guess you'll know when he does it and how often. I'm glad to know mine doesn't hurt, even if it's annoying.

I am glad to hear that I too know exactly how he feels! He gets really ticklish when I scratch his back. Its not so much the face rubbing, it's the "whoop whoop" that he does after the face rubbing, and sometimes before. I think his tickle gland goes crazy, not sure but I would LOVE to find out!

Hi, I have an old cat that does this all the time. We've always called her cat #1. After this past summer, I went back and read our adoption papers on her. It was a two-cat adoption. Our second cat was called #1 (the kitten) and I was #1. So I figured our "old" cat had two #1 cats. Then last night, she started doing #1 again! Now, I have three #1 cats! I need to do some serious research on this...

I don't remember if we have seen it already - it is the cat who does the "tail-wagging" thing. After a short period of time, it jumps from one paw to the other with its tail wagging, and then starts over. We think his tail is out of control. This is the only male kitten in the litter, so maybe it is "male-cat" behavior.

Thank you for the information. I will ask our vet. I will also make sure my vet has seen it. She will be retiring in August. She is going to write my cat the best obituary she can. He has no name. I like the sound of this cat...

I was talking to one of my vet techs the other day about cats and it's possible that my 9-yr. old cat has what I call "cataplexy." He also does #1 with his tail. He's a senior so it may be old age. Sometimes he'll stretch or jump off the sofa. I've thought about giving him something other than food to eat but his food is the best. It's what we have since our house was built in 1949. I just put that out there as a possibility. Hope
