A pump is a mechanical apparatus used to move water.Pump, in this context, refers to the moving of the water through a pipeline system. A pump may move a fluid through reciprocation or rotary motion. They are used to draw water from one place and push it to another place.

How does a pump work? A pump consists of a pump that is driven by an electric motor and a motor-driven impeller that draws water and moves it to the pump outlet. In order for the pump to function, there needs to be a pressure difference between the inlet and outlet. Centrifugal blowers have a motor attached to a series of impellers. The impellers are attached to the casing of the pump. This type of pump does not produce a positive displacement and it is very different than a positive displacement pump.

Rotary pumps have a stationary impeller in the center of a rotating pump casing. Water enters the pump and exits the pump in the same direction as the impeller. These pumps have very little suction head pressure.

Centrifugal pumps have a stationary impeller and a rotating pump casing. The water enters the pump and exits in the same direction as the impeller. These pumps are very similar to a centrifugal screw pump.

Centrifugal pumps are used for both pumping and blower applications. Centrifugal pumps have been used for years for both commercial and residential applications. The majority of centrifugal pumps used today are electric powered, driven by an electric motor and impeller.
