Can cats eat lavender and why?
Many of the same reasons why dogs might love to chew on it, I think there are a few reasons for cats to like it too.
The same as for a dog, there are risks. Lavender is the name for many plants that contain thujones which are the chemicals that contain the benefits. It contains salicylates that have a mild antibiotic action. However, lavender can cause stomach problems so it is best to not give it to a cat who is already sensitive to salicylates.
It is not a very tasty plant. I tried it and I didn’t care for the taste at all. It has a slightly acrid, camphor taste.
There are also more positive properties to it that make it a good cat care item. This list is not an exhaustive one, just some reasons why cats may like to chew on lavender:
Lavender is used as a natural remedy to help with feline constipation.
It has a calming effect on cats that will help to reduce anxiety.
When applied to the skin it can soothe minor burns and it can be helpful as an after bath scrub.
A scent of lavender that has been diffused or made into an essential oil can be used to create some interesting and tasty cat foods or treats.
How to help your cat to like lavender:
Lavender is a plant that you can grow yourself. It has been shown that if you can grow your own, the scent is stronger. There are some lavender tea blends that you can buy. The one that I use is called Cat’s Delight from Petco. It is lavender and catnip and the scent and flavor are a bit closer to what you might think lavender would smell like.
It is best to buy a lavender flower rather than the leaves or stem that contain the thujone.
Add a cup of lavender flowers to a bucket filled with warm water and leave it for a day or two.
Once it is ready to use, filter the lavender water and use it in your cat’s bath or to soak toys.
You can also dilute lavender essential oil with a carrier oil such as Jojoba or even use a lavender oil based lip balm.
Lavender will help reduce feline allergies so try to keep your cat out of places that have a stronger scent such as lavender plants or the lavender scented soap you are using.
I think that we could all learn something from cats: they are incredibly intelligent creatures, but don’t ask them to use their abilities to write a cheque or make a complicated piece of machinery. Instead, they use their remarkable brains to sniff our food and eat it, to chase down a butterfly, or to play with a feather that floats by. They can even solve a Rubik’s Cube – and this is the sort of thing that a mathematician would have no trouble working out! For example, cats have been used for research on different infectious diseases, including flu, diabetes and many more. Another example of cats in medicine: they’ve played a key role in a research team that discovered the structure of bones, which led to the first modern-day synthetic bone glue that’s also used by NASA in space flights.
Because of their natural ability to bond with other living things, cats have been used to test different types of pharmaceuticals.
Cats have also helped scientists during the development of anti-toxins. By analyzing the symptoms of different poisonings, they can develop new anti-toxins.
