### **Installing the Carburetor**

Next, you install the fuel pump and carburetor, which is a long, complicated process.

Installing the carburetor is pretty easy as long as you have a good idea about what you are doing. Figure 5-9 shows the carburetor on its new base plate. Note that the top of the base plate is held in place with the rubber band. To remove it, start at the end and pull the rubber band. Slide the base plate off.

** _Tools:_ ** All of these items can be picked up at your local home center. A good tool kit should include at least a Phillips head screwdriver and a good adjustable wrench.

### **Installing the Fuel Pump**

The fuel pump is the next major part to install, as shown in Figure 5-10. To assemble the fuel pump, first remove the two nuts on the intake and outlet sides of the base plate. (See Figure 5-10 for reference.) The nuts for the intake side are easily loosened with a Phillips screwdriver. (Don't try to unscrew the nut for the outlet side, it's held in place with a magnet that won't let it budge.)

Next, use the two long bolts and the adjustable wrench to remove the base plate from the pump. Then, start at the end and rotate the base plate toward you until the pump snaps into place on the base plate, as shown in Figure 5-11. Tighten the two nuts at the end of the base plate to hold the base plate in place.

### **Installing the Inlet Tube**

Now it's time to put the intake tube together. You'll need two 1/4-inch NPT inlet tubes and a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch NPT outlet tube. (These parts are standard.) Slip the two inlet tubes together, and make sure that the large fitting on the end of the inlet tube is oriented to the left. Then, slip the inlet tube into the pump. When you've done that, take the first of the two nuts off the base plate. (See Figure 5-12.)

Then, thread the second nut on the base plate, agn at the end of the inlet tube that's on the left. As you tighten the second nut, be sure to tighten the inlet tube to the base plate by hand, not by using the tool. As shown in Figure 5-13, loosen the tool.

When you've tightened the second nut, turn the pump over and repeat this process with the inlet tube at the right end, taking the second nut off the base plate. (This should not be any harder than the first nut, just reverse the process.) You should end up with a pump that looks like the one in Figure 5-14. You have to make sure that the two nuts are not in contact with one another. This helps keep the base plate from rotating.

### **Assembly**

Now we're going to put the base plate and the top plate together. Thread the two 1/4-inch nuts onto the threaded end of the top plate and tighten them in place. Make sure the two 1/4-inch bolts are not too tight. Once the nuts are in place, position the base plate over the top plate. You should have a slight gap between them, which allows room for expansion. You want to have an even gap between the base plate and top plate, as you will have to fill the gap with some kind of packing material.

Before closing the gap, screw in a few washers and tighten them. In order to keep the washers from being pulled off, slide them into place at the end of the spacer plate, as shown in Figure 5-15.

To close the gap, slide in the spacer plate that goes between the two base plates. Take care not to slide the spacer too far into the top plate, and then slide the base plate into place over the top plate, positioning it so that it presses agnst the spacer plate, as shown in Figure 5-16.

At this point, you're almost ready to install the water line and drn fittings. The next two chapters in the next chapter deal with these items.

## Installing a Water Line and Drn Fittings

With your new bathroom installed, it's time to go to town and install the water lines and drn fittings. After installing the tank and drn system, you will connect them to your wall so that you have a supply of running water and have the ability to drn your tank. Water supply line installation will be simple because the supply line will already have a fitting on it. The drn line will be a bit more complicated because you will need to install an elbow and possibly a tee or Y-connector.

This chapter and the next will show you how to connect the water line to your supply line and how to connect the supply and drn lines to your tank and drnage system.

Before you start, you will want to use your plumbing tape to mark where the lines will be on the wall. For the water line, tape the line where it will be connected to the supply line in a closet or hallway. For the drn line, tape the line where it will connect to your drn system. See Figure 5-17.

## Attaching the Water Line

Before attaching the water line, it will be necessary to remove any tape residue from the supply line. Start by detaching the supply line from your supply fixture. If you're not comfortable with removing plumbing tape, stop and call in a plumber, or ask your contractor to do it for you.

Turn off the water at the fixture that has the supply line attached to it. Remove the supply line from the fixture, and using a rubber cup, place a few drops of dishwashing liquid into the cup. Run a wet paper towel down the pipe, and when it dries, gently scrub it with a wire brush. Place a few drops of lubricant in the cup and repeat the procedure.

If you are using the dishwasher or a different type of faucet, the process will be similar, but without the need to clean the supply line.

Turn on the water to the supply line. Slowly follow the line until you reach the wall. If you are taping the supply line, it's best to tape it on the side of the house from where the water supply enters the house. (For help with taping a supply line, see the sidebar on the next page.)

Now that the supply line has been taped, it's time to attach the line to the wall. If you're using a water-control valve, turn it to the on position and attach the valve to the wall. When you have
