Cat food for hedgehogs
Pooch says: “We get our feed from a local farm who is a member of the Association of Vegan Hedgehog Feeders, who supply us with organic feed made from mealworms. There’s also a good variety of other insects that are on offer, such as black soldier flies, mealworms, silkworms and wax moths. We also use a wide variety of fruit and vegetables in our feed.
“We do not use any chemical additives, but if we did, they would include:
“The addition of fertiliser to our feed would be considered a good idea, but it is not the only thing that is used. Our feed is a natural, organic product which is balanced to provide the right nutrients for our hedgehogs.
“Hedgehogs also need a good source of calcium, so we always add this in their feed. Calcium is not only good for hedgehogs, but also for humans as it’s very important for our bones, muscles and teeth. We add about 1kg of dried calcium to their feed each month.”
Pooch says: “We have had great success with our feed. We have a long history with this particular supplier, who specialise in providing healthy, nutritious and affordable pet food, so we know what we’re buying.”
Hedgehogs eat insects, worms, fruit and vegetables. A healthy diet of organic, insect-based food is perfect for a hedgehog. Insects are rich in protein and minerals. Hedgehogs have no natural predators, so they rely on insects to survive.
Insects are eaten raw, cooked or frozen. The raw food is easier for the hedgehog to digest than the cooked and frozen versions. A healthy diet of raw feed helps to keep hedgehogs healthy and is a good alternative to raw rabbit pellets.
Pooch says: “You shouldn’t use any type of animal feed that contns additives or chemicals. This can make your hedgehogs ill and cause them to lose weight.”
