Why is my dogs eye swollen shut

My 10 month old pug puppy just has an eye swelling (white circle) in the top of her right eye. I took her to the vet and they sd it is an allergic reaction but we are not sure if it is from food. They had to sedate her but she started to shake as soon as they touched her eye and it did not look like any of her normal allergy symptoms. They put a few drops in her eye (I think they are some sort of anti-biotic drops) but it did not help her. They are thinking it is a reaction to her food. They gave me some over the counter drops but it has been almost 24 hours since the incident and her eye is still very swollen and closed. It was the only symptom that she has. They sd that it was probably from the food she ate or it could be a reaction to another food but they sd it did not look like it was a food allergy. They also sd that it could be a reaction to something that is not food that we gave her like an outside product or something like that. Any suggestions? I was also wondering if it was an indication of a bigger problem or is this an isolated incident? I took her in just so she could get checked over but I don't think they saw anything. They were very careful with it.

I think it is a bad reaction to a food and have asked her about it in the past. They usually take her in and give her some medicine and if it does not help the next day or two they will then take her to the vet. It's always better to be safe than sorry though.

If it is an allergy then there is no treatment and it should be expected to go away over time but this can take a while if you don't have the right medication.

Thanks for the info and the link. I will keep my eye on it. I am very cautious of the food we give her. I always read the labels before I put it in her bowl.

I am just trying to keep my mind off of it for a few days but it is hard to do.

I'm glad your puppy is ok, but I hope you are able to find out what food caused the reaction so that you don't have to have her on any anti-biotic drops or other medications.

Hi Tia! Thanks so much for the nice words! Yes she is very lucky to be ok. This happened right at a time that she was growing very fast. I am keeping her for the meantime but I am very concerned that she might have an infection as she is still not eating. She is about 10lbs so it is a little heavy for her to eat. I did read in one of your other posts that a swelling in an eye could be an infection. So I am wondering if this is the case or if they just have a different word for the same thing. Do you know of any other signs that she might be getting something other than food poisoning. I don't want to take any chances with her health. She is so small and she is getting so big so fast. I don't know how long it takes for a puppy to develop an infection. Thanks agn!

My heart goes out to you. My 10-month old boxer had a bad eye swelling like this. The vet thinks it's a reaction to something he ate. He was also a fast growing puppy, I'm so sorry your puppy is having the same thing. The vet sd it would take 2-3 days to get better but it's been four and he hasn't improved.

It could be the result of an infection, or some sort of reaction to something he ate. When I got my boxer he had already been taking antibiotics because of an ear infection and that didn't make a difference. I just want to see him better.

The vet sd the swelling would go down as the infection healed and it's still swollen.

I have a similar thing in my lab puppy. His eye was also swollen and it has been a while. We are thinking it is an allergy or an infection of some sort. The vet did some tests and gave him antibiotics. He had to sedate him so he would calm down and we could take care of the eye. I will have to take him in to see the vet in the next couple of days to get tested for an infection. We just don't want it to spread to the rest of his body. I have a friend who has an older lab pup and he got sick with it too. We are keeping our eye on this
