And as a result, there are fewer than four percent of cats in the UK that survive past their thirties.

Of all the medical conditions which afflict cats, diabetes is probably the most common.

For many cats, the result is a miserable life.

While the majority of cats that live to old age have mild diabetes which is managed with careful monitoring of blood sugar, some cats develop severe diabetes which causes pnful ulcers or blindness.

Because diabetes can be fatal in its advanced stages, cats who have not been identified as having the condition are put to sleep or euthanised.

“The mn problem is it's a chronic condition and so if you manage it for a long time it can kill them,” says Dr Mark Lathrop, an associate consultant with the Companion Animal Specialist Hospital (CASH) in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

“Cats can suffer with it for long periods of time so I can only really say from that point of view that I think it's the natural end.”

In the UK, nearly half a million cats are estimated to have diabetes.

For a population of over two million cats, that is around 1.2 percent of the entire cat population.

However, according to a study of cats in the UK, those animals represent just over one percent of all cats who were euthanised between 2010 and 2013.

That study looked at more than a million cats and found an increased number of deaths in those with diabetes compared to those without.

Dr Mark Lathrop of the Companion Animal Specialist Hospital (CASH) in St Albans, Hertfordshire, sd: “The most common complications in diabetes in cats are retinopathy, polyneuropathy and nephropathy.

“Some cats may experience these complications for the rest of their life.”

He sd cats with diabetes may also suffer with arthritis, kidney disease and blindness.

“Any of those are going to affect their ability to eat, they may eat too little or too much,” he sd.

“So they can get really constipated, they can become dehydrated.”

This is because cats are not able to process the carbohydrates that humans do, he explned.

“So they’re lacking the enzymes that humans have, and that allows the cats to have a very variable glucose level.”

Dr Lathrop sd the condition could go undetected for many years, and it was important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible.

He sd: “A cat who is not going to have any more complications is an old cat.

“I think we’re seeing those cats who have a poor control of the diabetes, they don’t manage it at all and it’s just something they have to live with.”

“The ones who have good management of the diabetes … generally live as long or longer as the general population.”

Diabetes can affect different systems in the body, leading to eye problems, a loss of teeth, kidney disease, and neurological damage.

Dr Lathrop sd that the best way to control the condition was by being able to monitor glucose levels.

“The sooner you get a diagnosis and are able to control this better, the better the outcome for that cat,” he sd.

“You just want to make sure they have a nice quality of life for as long as possible.”

Mr Lathrop sd that the condition was a growing problem in the United States and Australia.

He believed that many pet owners did not understand the condition, which affected the entire body.

“It’s still a disease where they’re very misunderstood and they’re not getting the care that they need,” he sd.

“If they do get diagnosed, they do very poorly … so, for a cat to live as long or longer, it’s a good thing.”

The condition was very pnful and most people wouldn’t realise that it was so serious, Mr Lathrop sd.
