Cat licking rusty metal: My first impression of the Russian-made Ural-2

On a freezing October morning, I was sitting on the deck of a boat anchored in a frozen lake. After three hours of wting in a queue for a ride, I was finally going to see the world’s biggest snowmobile. The only problem: my seat is behind the driver. He was sitting in the cabin in front of the passenger seats. But when he got up to drive, the passenger seats would slide apart. I felt like I was peeking into a trn that was about to crash.

The Russian-made Ural-2 is the world’s biggest snowmobile, designed for a driver and a passenger.

“Let’s sit together in the front,” I insisted to him. “You can drive with your knees and elbows and I can look at the scenery,” he replied, smiling. “I’m from a mountnous area in China and I’ve never seen a snowy landscape before. It’s gorgeous. Look at that.”

The driver was looking at the scenery in the distance. “That mountn looks like part of an island,” he sd. “It’s so beautiful.”

He paused. “In China, we don’t really have snow on the ground in summer. It’s too cold. But when it snows in our home, we have a lot of fun. We’d like to go to Russia someday.”

I asked him how much would he charge to drive me to a place I had never been to. He sd he could drive me for 1,000 yuan ($152), and I could pay him for the return trip as well. I told him I didn’t have a thousand yuan with me, but he seemed okay with it. He sd he’d be happy with 30 yuan ($4.88) each way.

“The trip will be just as long,” I sd to him. “Would you like to change it to 100 yuan?” I asked.

“That’s fine.”

“How about 200 yuan?”

“That’s fine.”

“I really don’t have anything. I can only pay with a credit card.”

He smiled at me. “We have a credit card, too. Why don’t we drive to China together? That’s just as far as China is from Moscow.”

When I told him my name was Anastasia, he asked if we could be friends.

I hope the photo of the snow storm in Russia is not just the sun playing tricks with my eyes and the snow looks to be white, it just looks black because it is winter. It does look very pretty.

Hi,

I'm glad you liked the pictures and the entry. I did enjoy posting them.

Hi,

Thanks for your interest.

To be honest I didn't know there were so many pictures of snow in Russia. As you may know I came to visit the Russian Federation after I posted a similar entry in which I took lots of pictures. I was shocked by the number of pictures of snow in Russia. Here's a link to that entry if you're interested. http://blog.aussietraveler.net/2006/01/23/russian-snow/
