The shock on a Garmin GPS car collar is one of the most important parts of the vehicle, so don’t expect your collar to last forever. The shock absorber will fail after a number of years, and usually happens after six years. At this point it won’t be cheap to replace a shock absorber, but we’re going to show you the easy way to replace your shock, along with some advice.

What to look for when replacing shock absorber

The first thing to do when replacing a Garmin GPS car collar shock absorber is to identify it properly. This will make it easier to find the right shock replacement part later on.

Shock absorber model

Your Garmin GPS car collar model is going to be identified by your OEM model number, which we’ll be showing at the top of the article. This is going to be part of the model number that the product sticker is attached to on the shock absorber.

So for example, the first shock absorber on the list below is the original shock, part # 513-0022-001, and part # 469-0000-001 will be the replacement part.

Shock absorber number

You can often find your OEM part number in two places. Either on the shock, or on the box or packaging that the shock was sold in. If you don’t have either of these two things, or if the part number has been changed since the product was sold, then you can look it up online.

Shock absorber mounting point

It’s good to remember the mounting points, or the holes, where the shock absorber bolts to the car body, when you’re putting the shock on.

The reason for this is that you need to make sure that the mounting holes that you drill into the shock absorber, line up with the hole in the body where the original bolt was in use.

The way to find these holes is to remove the shock absorber from the vehicle, and then carefully look at the original holes. If they are drilled in the correct place, then you’re good to go.

Shock absorber replacement

The shock absorber replacement kits that we’re going to talk about in this article are only an idea. I cannot guarantee that they will work on your particular shock absorber.

The reason for this is that some shock absorbers have different types of springs in them than some other types of shocks.

It’s really best to check with the mechanic you got your shock from to see if he or she has a shock absorber kit that will work on your shock, or to know how to go about replacing the one that you have.

If you have some experience and confidence with shocks then you’ll probably be OK.

Just remember to be careful with the new one. It might have a slightly different spring or piston. If it seems to have too much spring or too much pressure, then go to the next step.

To keep it simple, you should check each of the following before you order a shock absorber kit:

Fully remove the shock absorber from the car

Look to see if the nuts have been torqued on

If so, then replace with another

If they aren’t torqued on, then don’t bother. Simply take them off with a wrench.

Check the spring if it has a good bounce to it. If not, then you’ll need to replace it

Check the piston if it has a good bounce to it. If not, then you’ll need to replace it

Check the dust cap if it hasn’t been removed. If so, then you’ll need to replace it

If there’s no dust cap then your dust cap is missing. It might be in the bushes, but you’ll need to order a dust cap anyway

Check that there’s no oil on the spring or piston

If there is, then your shock absorber is leaking oil

Also, check that there’s no dirt on the piston. This is especially important for the car you’re replacing as a worn piston is the most common problem with a non-dyno tuned shock absorber kit

Order your replacement shock absorber kit

It can take up to a month for your shock absorber kit to arrive, but it’s worth the wait!

The last step is to install the new shock absorber kit, and that’s exactly what you’ll be doing.

The first step is to fully reinstall the stock spring (if it has a soft spring, then you’ll need to replace that with a harder spring too)

Next, check that the piston and dust cap are both installed correctly. Then, insert the shock absorber kit into the car, and slowly move it forward and backward. You’ll need to make sure the shock absorber is aligned with the strut. It should have no gaps and make a ‘ping’ sound when moved in and out of alignment.

This is another great way of ensuring that the shock absorber is installed correctly.

To install the shock absorber kit, you’ll have to remove the wheel. The stock shock absorber mount is attached to the wheel using 2 bolts, so you’ll need to remove the bolts and the stock wheel. Don’t worry, the new shock absorber will have the same mounting holes

The last step is to reinstall the new wheel.

There you go – your shock absorber is back in place and functioning as new!

The process should take you a maximum of 30 minutes. Then, once everything is back to normal, you’ll be back on the road and enjoying your new ride with a brand new shock absorber kit in place!
