Cat wash: when cats help with grooming?

Cats usually do their grooming and cat washing very independently and thoroughly. An additional bath is usually unnecessary and uncomfortable for the velvet paws. But there are situations in which additional fur care cannot be avoided by the cat owner and in which a cat bath is even necessary. Cats only need additional grooming measures in certain situations and washing cats with water is only necessary in emergencies. "Dry" fur care depends on the type of fur the animal has. Most cat owners are equipped with appropriate pet hair brushes or with a furminator.

Grooming for long-haired pedigree cats

Some cat breeds have a very long coat, such as Persian or forest cat breeds. The rough tongue is a wonderful natural brush, but there are mattings and knots if the fur is not brushed daily by the cat owner. People with thick, long hair can best understand this, taming the mane can be a challenge.

In addition, it is important to remove loose hair through daily grooming so that your velvet paw does not swallow it when washing cats and too many hairballs form. This risk is greater for long-haired cats than for short-haired cats. However, brushing the fur regularly with the brush will remove most of the loose hair and your cat will swallow less of it.

Additional grooming for outdoors and older cats

If your cat is a free litter, additional care may also be necessary. In general, if your velvet paw has sticky or matted fur that you can't get loose with your tongue alone, your help is needed.

Grooming by the cat owner is also often necessary for older cats. The daily hours of care is simply exhausting and wears off with age. Brush your old lady or hangover weekly if the coat is short. You should comb and brush long fur anyway - as already described above.

Grooming: When your cat is sick

The same applies to injured and sickly animals that are too weak to care for their fur themselves. If bald spots appear in the fur and it is not due to territorial battles with other species, it may be malnutrition or parasites. A veterinarian should take a look at your cat and, if necessary, provide food supplements for your cat. If your fur nose has cat fleas, veterinarians can also provide you with appropriate medication, such as flea powder or a flea bath.

When to bathe a cat?

A cat usually scratches, meows, and defends itself against the water when trying to bathe it. And that is understandable: Cats who are not used to water or who like to play with it due to their breed instinctively fear it. In exceptional cases, however, a bath cannot be avoided - for example if there are toxic, chemical or very sticky substances in the fur.

However, basic cleaning is not easy. There are some tips in our guide "How to bathe cats in an emergency". With luck, cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient. Many substances can also be combed out with the right brush.
