Information

Bactroban & Dogs

Bactroban is the brand name of a prescription antibiotic for humans; its active ingredient is mupirocen. If your dog is suffering from a serious skin infection, such as staph or pyoderma, your veterinarian may prescribe Bactoderm, not Bactroban, to treat the infection.

Function

Mupirocin prohibits bacteria from spreading, as well as heals the infected area. The product is available in an ointment, a cream and a shampoo. Your veterinarian may ask you to apply Bactoderm twice daily, for a maximum period of 30 days, or may instruct you on proper shampoo schedule and application.

Precautions

Some dogs may be sensitive to mupirocin. It’s imperative to watch for further irritation after application to ensure your dog isn’t allergic or otherwise sensitive to the ointment. Pfizer, the maker of Bactoderm, warns that the product has not been tested for use on pregnant or breeding animals, and therefore should not be applied to pregnant or breeding dogs.
