Home Remedy for Mosquito Bites on My Dog

After a day outside and exposure to mosquitoes, you may come home feeling itchy and miserable. Treating his itchy symptoms helps relieve the discomfort and reduces the risk of infection from scratching and biting.

Symptoms of Mosquito Bites

Mosquito bite saliva irritates the skin and causes swelling. You may notice raised bumps on your dog’s skin. He may scratch or aggressively chew the area to try to ease the discomfort. Occasionally, a dog can have an allergic reaction to mosquito bites. Symptoms of allergic reactions include fever, facial swelling, lethargy, loss of appetite and hives. Seek immediate veterinary attention in the event of an allergic reaction.

Home remedies for mosquito bites include many products you may have at home. Apply a small amount of milk of magnesia to the bite area. Other options include a paste of oatmeal and water or baking soda and water. Reapply as needed to reduce discomfort. Monitor your dog to make sure he isn’t chewing or breaking open bites, risking infection.

Heartworm Prevention

In addition to discomfort, mosquito bites can spread heartworm to your dog. This is a serious and often fatal condition. If you live in an area prone to mosquitoes, talk to your veterinarian about medication to prevent heartworm.
