Puppies are born helpless, essentially dependent on their mothers -- with eyes closed and unable to hear. During the first few days of life, a puppy's mother provides all the care he needs, and he will usually get his first glimpse of the world at between 7 to 14 days old. If you're caring for a litter and a puppy's eyes are closed for longer than two weeks, he should be examined by a vet.

Early Eyesight Development In Puppies

A puppy's eyes are still growing when he is born. His eyelids are shut tight for the first two weeks or so to protect his sensitive eyes from light damage and contaminants in the environment. Even when a puppy's lids do open up, his eyesight is not fully formed, and his vision will continue to improve over the next several weeks.
