Chocolate -- mankind's second-best friend -- is, of course, toxic to your dog. You can treat your dog a flavor that's something close, though, by making peanut butter cookies with carob icing. Carob is a chocolate substitute that's safe for pooches. Making homemade cookies with icing is a family fun way to provide your pet a special delight. It's a good way to avoid junk-laden commercial treats.
Center an oven rack and preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Combine 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 cup wheat germ, 3/4 cup oatmeal, 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup honey in your blender's mixing bowl.
Mix the ingredients at low speed until they're fully incorporated.
Use about 1 tablespoon of this batter to form a ball. Place it on an ungreased cooking sheet. Repeat until you've used all the batter. There should be enough to make about 20 cookies for your dog. Space the batter balls evenly, not touching each other.
Put the cookie sheet into the center of the fully preheated oven and bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes, until they're golden brown. Cooking time varies slightly by oven, so keep an eye on your doggie treats so they don't burn.
Transfer the dog cookies to a cooling rack right away to prevent the bottoms from burning. Allow them to cool completely -- preferably for several hours -- before icing them, or the icing may not adhere well.
Prepare the carob icing. Put 3 cups of carob chips into a double boiler and melt them. If you don't have a double boiler, melt the carob chips in the microwave a few seconds at a time, stirring between, to prevent burning them.
Stir 1 teaspoon canola oil into the melted carob chips.
Dip your completely cooled dog cookies into the carob icing, or apply the icing onto the treats with a rubber-tipped stirrer or icing piper. Let the icing cool and harden for one hour before serving. Serve at room temperature.
