Originally bred to help fishermen in Newfoundland, Labrador retrievers helped pull in the fishnets and retrieve escaped fish. The Lab's personality is calm and stable, and while still a good hunting dog, these animals are well-suited for families.
Gender Makes a Difference
Depending on gender, a full-grown Labrador retriever weighs in at 55 to 70 pounds for a female who should be 21½ to 23½ inches tall at her withers, and 65 to 80 pounds for a male who should stand 22½ to 24½ inches tall at his withers. These are the standard weights for full-grown working dogs and don't apply to puppies younger than a year old.
