Female cat in heat - Free Advice -

Ok im starting to worry about my kitty. She has just turned 9 months old and has never been in heat. I have tried everything I know to be sure she is not in heat and was able to do a complete blood test and it came back normal. (This is a year later) I don't want to get too concerned as there was no indication in the first test that she was in heat but if I do get concerned she will be spayed the first week of June. I have been doing weekly tests of ovulation since she turned 2 months old. I know she is ready and her testicles have started to drop and become darker. She is currently on cephapirin for her tooth infection. The vet who gave her the cephapirin has told me that tooth infections are common when a cat is in heat. If she is in heat I am worried about the infection causing her to have an abscess or something similar that will cause her to have a reaction. Does anyone have any advise for me. I have posted on another board and gotten no responses. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

I have been following a similar thread for awhile. We had a cat that went through a period of "in heat" without producing anything. It was a female (we spayed her anyway at about 5 years old). There were no visible signs. I'd suggest looking for other signs as well. She could be acting "silly" - licking/nibbling herself, for example.

If she is not showing signs, I'd suggest starting her on something else to treat the tooth infection, and watch her for signs of heat. There are some things that she can have, and those things can cause her to have some hormonal changes.

Thanks for your responses. My cat is a male. The tooth infection is on the right side of her mouth. I will look for other signs. I think I am going to start her on cephapirin. My concern is if she is going into heat soon I am not sure how she will react. Will it be a good idea to put her on some other medication to help her have a more positive reaction? Thanks for your help!

She is male and the right side? The tooth infection would be on the lower jaw. The infection is caused by bacteria and is caused by the bacteria being introduced into the mouth by the owner. If she was licking herself, it could be she is trying to get rid of the infection. If she is licking a lot, you could do a check of her mouth to be sure. But if you think she is just acting silly, that might be more important right now than treating the tooth infection.

My little female was in heat 3 times without ever producing anything. She was spayed at 3 years old. At 6 months old, I noticed a very small spot on her vagina which I ignored. At a year, I noticed a bigger spot, and by 2 years old, she was producing an egg. It was not until 3 years later that we saw her fully.

When you're concerned, you need to do a "pulse" of your cat. Look for the signs that you need to act. This can be done just by "holding your hand on her belly and feeling the pulse of her abdomen". If you're unsure how to do this, it can be very easily done with a doggy. Look at the bottom of the front leg. The doggy's front leg will move up and down if the dog is breathing, and it can be checked if you can feel it at the bottom of the leg.

It can also be done if you have the doggy on a leash. If you have the leash on, you can walk the dog around and check its pulse, or you can put the doggy on a table and check its pulse if you're near enough to it to check it without touching it.
